The Institute for Community Research is currently seeking applicants for the position of Ethnographer/Research Associate.

ETHNOGRAPHER/RESEARCH ASSOCIATE

The Institute for Community Research has an immediate minimum 12-month full-time or part-time opening for an Ethnographer/Research Associate at the MA/MS level to participate in a three year NIDA funded study of youth party and social activity situations, drug use including Ecstasy and intimate relationships and practices. The position involves field ethnography and in-depth interviews with MDMA using polydrug using young men on their relationships, sexual activity and substance use.  Written recording of interviews, some transcription coding and group analysis and write up are critical to the position. The candidate will join an ethnographic research team under the overall guidance of Jean J. Schensul, Principal Investigator and will be supervised by the study Coordinator, Elsie Vazquez. The position is subject to available federal funds. ICR offers a culturally and intellectually diverse, community based collaborative research environment with options and support for career advancement.

Specific responsibilities include the following:

  • Conduct field ethnography in sites and situations where Greater Hartford
    male youth party, socialize and get together, and record observations on a regular basis.
  • Recruit and conduct in-depth interviews with young men who use Ecstasy on their social and drug histories, use of ecstasy, intimate relationships and current sexual activity.
  • Some transcription and coding of data collected via interviews and field observations.
  • Participate in coding, data review and analysis sessions with PI, project coordinator and other members of the research team.
  • Contribute to and/or take leadership in publishing papers and doing presentations on the topic of ecstasy and other social drugs and sexual risk.
  • Contribute to the development and writing of grants that focus on substance use prevention among youth and young adults.


Required Qualifications:
Completed M.A., MS, M.P.H., ABD or equivalent experience in a social science field (sociology, anthropology, social work, public health, family studies) and experience in the conduct of ethnography in field settings including observations, recruitment and conduct of indepth interviews with young adults of diverse ethnic backgrounds, especially males.
Some experience coding, analyzing and writing up qualitative/ethnographic data.
Excellent writing ability.
Prior experience in a drug use related field, position or project.
Knowledge of the fields of gender substance use and sexual risk desirable.

Essential Job Functions:

Recruit appropriate study participants.

Conduct and record topic specific in-depth and key informant interviews.

Conduct and record study observations in social settings where party drugs may
be used.

Code, analyze and write up ethnographic interview and observational data in a timely way using Atlas Ti or comparable software.

Conceptualize study tasks and presentations and help to develop papers for publication and dissemination approaches.

Relate to the multiethnic study target population, especially males

Team work in research and grant writing.

Work Schedule Demands:
35 - 40 hour week minimum dedicated to field research, recording, coding and analysis.
Availability for study team meetings.
Ability to work some nights and weekends in observation and informal interviewing in public social settings.
Meet schedule of production for analysis and paper preparation and participation in additional grant writing activities.

Salary: Commensurate with experience
